Writing a College Essay or ThesisTo write a college essay or thesis is to show your skill at arguing a fact and your ability to persuade the readers to come to the same conclusion as you have. Putting together a thesis requires a lot of thought, research and study. In life you will rely on persuasion for many different situations. This exercise simply teaches one to come up with a convincing argument that will persuade anyone to see your point of view. This skill can be used in many business situations that you may find yourself in. The more skilled you are in the art of persuasion, the more likely you are to get employees and corporations to stand behind you. In the vast majority of college essays, you will need to flex your persuasive muscle. The first thing that you would need to do is come up with a thesis statement. This is a sentence that sums up what your essay is about. There can be no question about this statement or else it weakens the whole concept. Make sure you come up with a strong powerful statement that states very clearly what the whole essay is going to be about. Once you’ve come up with a thesis, you’ll need to ask yourself if the statement is too open ended… in other words, does the reader still have questions about what your position will be after reading the sentence? If so, you’ll need to revise the thesis until you get a well-built, specific sentence. It needs to make a strong positive statement about your topic. Another tip for creating a good thesis is to use a controversial topic. This encourages the reader to keep reading to see how you prove your point. Once you’ve come up with a strong working thesis statement, it’s now time to work on the argument which is basically the body of the essay. Keep in mind that your essay has to prove your statement and persuade the reader to fall in line with your thinking. Do not deviate from the thesis statement. The whole purpose of the essay is to support your thesis. So when you are writing your college essay, always keep that thought in mind and you’ll have a successful paper. An argument is really one person’s interpretation of a situation or a fact. One cannot just provide information that’s been gathered or researched. You have to take a stand and show how you believe it to be true in your own thinking. Be firm, persuasive and convincing in getting the reader to turn to your thinking. The catch is that you have to have evidence to support your claim. The essay has to convince someone that you know what you are talking about. The final, and perhaps most important part about writing a college essay or thesis, is to do some analysis. You can cite facts and studies that support your topic, but you must also spend some time reminding the reader what they mean in the grand scheme of things. If you were writing a thesis about immigrant's rights, you might want to include information about laws that were passed in the United States in the 1900s that discriminated against Chinese, African, and Irish immigrants. To drive the point home, you would need to conclude and interpret these facts by pointing out that the discrimination of the time was felt by people of all ethnic groups, and not just directed hatefully towards a single people. Analyze your facts instead of simply stating them. Professors who hand out thesis assignments are looking to see how well you understand the materials studied in class and to see how convincingly you are able to go beyond what was covered in class. Don’t just state a point and go around it in circles. Look for convincing evidence to prove your point. Always stay within your thesis statement. It’s very easy to go off on a tangent when you get excited about the subject matter and in the end, you’ll find yourself with a totally different paper than you intended in the beginning. Stay focused and on track. Keep your essay very tight and focused on proving one thing only, your thesis statement. By doing this, you’ll find yourself with an essay that commands a reader’s attention. |
